Working at Heights and Ladder Safety

About the course

This is a practical, hands-on workshop to help train staff about working at heights and using ladders. It will help them to work out the relative risks associated with different activities, and the best ways to reduce the risk of accidents occurring. Many accidents occur from a poor choice of equipment, badly maintained ladders or basic lack of understanding about how to use a ladder safely. We look at sensible, realistic safety precautions that can be taken to prevent accidents.

Who is the course for?

Anyone who supervises those who work with ladders, step-ladders or at heights. This can include maintenance staff, teachers, caterers, managers, leisure staff etc.

How long does it take?

About 1½ hours.

Any other information?

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 came into force in April, and require working at height to be properly planned and supervised. Don’t forget, there is no set height – falling from a chair can cause major injury.

As in all areas of health and safety, employers are required to try and remove the risk of injury to staff. Is it necessary to have staff working at height, or can the task be completed in another way?

Are there any other safer means of doing the job? Remember, ladders are only suitable for short duration, light duty work.

If you must use a ladder, it needs to be the right ladder for the job, in good condition, and your staff need to know how to use it safely. Raising awareness of the risks associated with these activities through practical training is essential to ensure staff safety.
